The Real Estate Investment Society (REIS) proudly announces the award of its annual endowed FGCU scholarship to Krista Adams, a student at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). The scholarship provides $500 toward tuition and books. Adams also recently received a $2,500 scholarship from the REIS Scholarship Foundation
Krista Adams is a senior, pursuing a degree in Finance with a minor in Real Estate. She has been on the Dean’s List for six consecutive semesters at FGCU and is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and the Financial Managers Association. She plans to earn a graduate degree and follow a career in real estate development.
In conjunction with the scholarship, Adams receives honorary membership in REIS, where she may attend meetings on a complimentary basis. “We welcome outstanding scholars like Krista to join us, to learn about the area’s commercial real estate industry, and develop relationships with members of the business community,” explained REIS President Sharon Jenkins-Owen.
REIS established the scholarship program in 1999 to benefit local students seeking business-oriented education. REIS President Sharon Jenkins-Owen announced that “the REIS scholarship programs represent our commitment to our profession and our community. We support student interest in business by providing financial assistance for their higher education and welcoming them to participate in our meetings and workshops. Our goal is to promote the professionalism of our future business leaders and thereby the economic vitality of our community.”
Shelton Weeks, PhD, chairman of the REIS scholarship committee, explained that the endowed FGCU scholarship award is an annual event. “The program was funded initially with a $5,000 endowment from REIS, which was matched by the State of Florida’s Ethics and Business Scholarship Program. The scholarship fund is structured to continue in perpetuity. Applicants must be graduates of a Southwest Florida high school and have completed the freshman year of college. They must also be enrolled in the School of Business.” Students interested in applying for scholarships may do so by contacting the Financial Aid and Scholarship Office (FASO) of Florida Gulf Coast University. Qualified applicants are reviewed by the university scholarship committee and the REIS Board of Governors.
“REIS enjoys a long term relationship with the University and with the students,” said Jenkins-Owen. “Scholarship recipients become honorary members of the Real Estate Investment Society and are welcome to attend our meetings, not only to recognize their achievements, but to foster relationships between business students and the business community.” Information on is available at the REIS web site: www.reis-swfl.org or from Scholarship Chairman Shelton Weeks, PhD, (239) 590-7373.
